“This is the third attempt as we wake up at 5am and even though we arrived at 7am there was already a queue of over 100 people,” complained one woman.

REAL ID in 2005 was passed by Congress in response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. REAL ID cards are built with technology that makes them more difficult to counterfeit, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

A REAL ID driver’s license or other documents are required to board airplanes, enter nuclear power plants, or enter certain federal buildings.

REAL IDs are issued at special Georgia driver’s license issuing stations. In general, those who want to get them must provide documents showing their legal name, date of birth, social security number or proof of legal status to be in the United States and two proofs of their primary residential address.

• Proof of identity and legal status (for non-US citizens)
• An ID in Georgia costs $32 and expires after eight years.

REAL ID does not replace a passport required for international travel and also does not affect the ability to vote or register to vote, applications for federal benefits, entry into federal facilities that do not require identification, obtaining medical care or participating in procedures, or police investigations.
