Yann LeCun, a Turing Award laureate and one of the 3 researchers dubbed the “Godfathers of AI,” suggests that Elon Musk’s promises of self-driving Tesla cars are lies, reports futurism.com.
“Elon: ‘I’ve been lying to you over and over again for the last 8 years about Tesla’s Fully Self-Driving capabilities, but you should believe everything I say about politics and everything else,'” LeCun wrote in a message recently shared on “X”, the social network owned by Musk.
LeCun’s brief message, in which he paraphrases the South African billionaire’s alleged mindset, came on a post in which the researcher re-shared an extensive analysis published by Dan O’Dowd, a tech entrepreneur and activist known for his criticism of address of Musk and Tesla.
“Elon Musk promised the world for 10 years that Tesla was on the way to solving autonomy. Tesla is not even close. After years of failures, Musk announced in 2023 Full Autonomous Driving Version 12, which he promised would be the savior of Tesla’s terrible autonomous driving project,” writes Dowd in the opening of the analysis in which he calls the South African billionaire a “quack “.
“But after years of development, v12 has proven to be just as bad as its predecessor, Version 11,” he pointed out.
“Tesla is still unable to make Fully Autonomous Driving work, despite a total rewrite. It is clear that they are not capable of solving autonomy. Tesla’s robot taxi business is dead on arrival,” Dowd wrote at the end of the analysis, referring to another project promised by Musk.
Hallucinatory argument between Elon Musk and a well-known researcher
As for Yann LeCun, a computer scientist who currently teaches at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences in New York and is the research director of the company Meta, he is not the first to argue with Elon Musk.
In a message also shared on X in late May, LeCun wrote that people should only join xAI if they “can stand a boss” who “spells crazy conspiracy theories” and makes exaggerated claims about how the things being worked on “will be fixed next year”.
He was referring to the artificial intelligence research company that Musk founded last summer after the billionaire invited people to come work on xAI “if you believe in our mission to understand the universe.” Musk presents his company as a “third way” in the field of artificial intelligence research.
When LeCun wrote that he chose to work at Meta, the company founded and run by Mark Zuckerberg, instead of starting his own company because “I’m a scientist, not a businessman,” Musk asked him “what ‘science’ you have done in the last 5 years”. He also rejected as “nothing” the more than 80 specialized articles that LeCun published only from 2022 onwards.
“You’re getting weak. Try harder,” Musk also wrote to the researcher’s “X,” adding that he was “just following orders,” a likely reference to LeCun being Mark Zuckerberg’s employee at Meta.
The exchange of lines was so unusual that it was reported in full by the well-known financial magazine Forbes.
Yann LeCun received the Turing Award for his contributions to the field of “Deep learning”
In 2018, LeCun received, along with researchers Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, the Turing Award for their work on structured deep learning technology (“deep learning”), which is part of the family of automated learning methods based on artificial neural networks.
The 3 researchers are colloquially called “Godfathers of AI” or “Godfathers of Deep learning”.
Considered the “Nobel Prize of Computer Science,” the AM Turing Award is awarded annually to “an individual chosen for contributions of a technical nature to the computer science community” that “must be of major and lasting significance in the field of computer science.”
The award is named after Alan Mathison Turing, the British mathematician who is considered by many scientists to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.
