Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of six different types of cancer, reports The Health Site. Adults under the age of 50 have increasingly developed breast and colorectal cancer over the past six decades, and alcohol consumption may be a contributing factor to this trend.
This is stated in a report of the American Association for Cancer Research, the conclusions of which were published by The New York Times.
The authors also describe a troubling pattern: Although cancer mortality has declined, the overall incidence of several cancers has inexplicably increased. Of particular concern is the increase in cases of colorectal cancer of the gastrointestinal system among young people.
Scientists estimate that 40 percent of all cancers are associated with modifiable risk factors. In particular, they recommend reducing alcohol consumption as well as lifestyle changes – such as quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy diet and weight, exercising, avoiding ultraviolet radiation and minimizing exposure to pollutants.
Raising awareness
The study authors call for increased awareness through public information campaigns and the addition of cancer warning labels on alcoholic beverages.
“The recommendations come amid a comprehensive review of the purported health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption, which for years was believed to protect against heart disease,” the paper adds.
Both moderate and light drinking have been reported to be associated with more cancer deaths than for people who drink very rarely. This is particularly noticeable among older people with low incomes and those with co-existing health problems.
Alcohol increases the risk of cancer
“Fifty-one percent of people – or more than half – do not know that alcohol increases the risk of cancer. This is alarming. We can talk about the myth that red wine has potential cardiovascular benefits, but there are many ways to keep your heart healthy, and those potential benefits don’t really outweigh the cancer risks,” says Jane Figueiredo, an epidemiologist at Samuel Oshin Comprehensive Cancer. Institutes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
According to scientists, excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of six types of malignant diseases, including squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus and some types of brain, breast, colorectal, liver and gastric cancer, exquis.ro cites.
